Public Lectures with James Alison
Sydney, 22 September, 6.30pm: ‘‘Violence gives rise to religion: And why popular culture has this back to front…’ (College Chapel, St Paul’s College, 9 City Rd, Camperdown).
Much popular culture and academic literature identifies religion as the cause of violence. In contrast, what if the opposite is the case: that violence gives rise to religion? James Alison will show that religion is actually an answer to the problem of human violence, which develops as a fundamental issue in human evolution and hominization.
Canberra, 26 September, 6.30pm: “Beyond Us and Them: contemplation and living with enemies in a globalised world” (Alison Lecture Canberra abstract)
Brisbane, 28 September, 6.30pm: Love in a Time of Terror
In an age marked by terrorism, much focus is placed on the efforts of police, military and intelligence to prevent or counter violence. But what role is there for love in an age marked by extremist violence? What is erotic love? What is agapeic love? What is “romantic” love? And how can love be understood within a theological anthropology, using René Girard’s mimetic theory?
Adelaide, 3 October, 7.30pm: ‘‘Violence gives rise to religion: And why popular culture has this back to front…’
